Manufacturers are heading into 2018 with historic optimism and are taking advantage of an improving business climate to expand their footprint in the United States. Manufacturers like Michael Foods, La-Z-Boy and Lockheed Martin have already announced exciting new investments in new facilities in the past few weeks.
Canfor Corp., a Canada-based global supplier of pulp and paper products, detailed its plans last week to expand its presence in the United States. The company plans to spend $120 million to build a new sawmill in Washington, Georgia:
The new sawmill, which will cost approximately US$120 million and have a production capacity of 275 million board feet, will employ best-in-class mill technology, capitalizing on an excellent fibre resource in the region to produce high-value dimension and specialty lumber products.
Strategically located near the company’s existing glulam facility in Washington and the larger population centers in Athens and Augusta, the new mill will be able to draw on a strong and skilled employee base.
“This new mill supports our growth strategy and will provide strong economic returns over the cycle,” said Canfor President and CEO Don Kayne. “We are pleased to expand our presence in the community of Washington and look forward to providing additional high-value products to our global customers.”
Canfor did not reveal how many jobs the new mill is expected to bring. Last November, Canfor announced a $28 million investment in one of its existing manufacturing facilities in Moultrie, Georgia. That expansion created 40 jobs at the mill or in supporting roles and 60 new construction jobs.
Canfor operates 14 manufacturing facilities in the southern United States, employing more than 2,000 workers in North and South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Arkansas. As of 2016, 99.5 percent of Canfor’s woodlands operations meet independent North American standards for sustainable forest management.
